In fact, the RCA designation is a bit of a misnomer, as the only record the group recorded there was 1959's Shout!, so this winds up being a deep dive on the Isleys' work for T-Neck, the independent label they launched in 1964.

The Isleys also are a bottomless well for samples in hip-hop. "Shout", "Twist and Shout", "This Old Heart of Mine", "It's Your Thing", "That Lady", and "Fight the Power" all arrived during the glory days of Top 40 in the '60s and '70s, enduring hits still heard on oldies radio, movies, television, and commercials. Few other artists can match that kind of longevity and, fittingly, the band's biggest hits still resonate.

They last cracked the charts in 2006, with "Just Came Here to Chill" petering out at 25 on the R&B charts.
But the Chairmen of the Board were the label's real stars, the quirky catch in lead singer General Johnson's voice bringing a distinctive appeal to hits like "(You've Got Me) Dangling on a String" that has lasted every bit as well as H-D-H's Motown classics.The Isley Brothers first appeared on Billboard in 1959, when "Shout (Part 1)" made its way to 47 on the Hot 100. Their A&R and production skills were clearly undiminished, with Freda Payne's "Band of Gold" giving the label its first global hit, and creditable work coming from the likes of Brenda Holloway and Parliament. Accordingly, at the end of the Sixties, they left to start their own label, Invictus, whose output is anthologised here across three CDs.
